I actually have pottery and mugs from various countries. As a military brat, I have had the opportunity to buy a mug that is the size of a cereal bowl from Waechtersbach, Germany. Although my mug doesn't look anything like the stoneware salt beer mug above, I do recall the pottery shop having various salt glaze pottery. If I remember correctly this type salt glazing pottery was perfected in the Rhineland.
Consider yourself entered Samantha! And you are correct! This type of salt glazing was perfected in the Rhineland! It also made it's way to the Genesee region of NY with the wave of German settlers that came to this area.

I agree Samantha, a wonderful way to promote the Village. I know that our family, which does live close to it, loves going and learning new things. As member, we try to get out there as much as possible. It seems that we learn something new each time we visit!!

ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting time for GCM. We have been visiting the Museum frequently since our daughters 3rd or 4th grade class visited on a school trip back in the 80's. Fell in love with the place and all of the events that take place. The staff and voulenteers are great and very knowledgable. Always enjoy the 4th of July festivities as well as the Fiddlers Faire, Agriculteral Faire and the Halloween celebration. Looking forward to visiting the Brewery and seeing /winning a new Growler. ReplyDeleteShe is earning money to attend the homeschoolers seminar about Living a Long Time ago. She is picking strawberries to sell, and is also making bread. She set up a little shop after church the past two weeks and has made over $50 dollars. She is so excited!!!

I am so glad you are doing this blog and are on Facebook. This way I can virtually visit since I can't visit in person from 2000 miles away. This is a great location to share Stuart's Musings. He always has such great stories filled with information. I would love to see one based on his fences presentation from years back.

A couple questions regarding the new FAT OX ALE (which is very good by the way!) can I bring a Custom Brewcrafter growler to refill or do I need a new growler? Can I buy the new stoneware salt glazed growler pictured-and if so, does it have a sealing cap to keep the beer from going flat?

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Upstate NY and enjoyed many trips to the Genesee Country museum with my parents, nana and pa, and friends. Now that I'm in AZ I think it's time to come back and visit the musuem in the fall. :)
ReplyDeleteOur family recieved a membership at GCVM from my brother some years ago and we have continued membership. Being from WNY, we love going at all times of the year. There is always something new to learn for young and old. The new/old brewery is a real piece of history that is a welcome addition. We were over yesterday for Father's Day. What a great day!!!

ReplyDeleteWe have been going to the museum for 25 years and at least 4 times a year and for special events.Now I am teaching my grand children the love of this museum, why it is so important to restore these buildings for the future. It is so important to learn form the past to understand where we are to go in the future. The Hyde is our favorite house and my daughters want to have their weddings in the gardens in the next year.
